Family History

The Vanson nuclear family - My father Paul, my Mother Edith (Sally), Louise & Yvette at Garrick Close, Walton on Thames, Surrey circa 1955...

My Father worked at Cartier in Bond Street and was a Labour councillor for over 35 years; my Mother had worked for Stolles Agency booking acts before she married and then 'kept home' as so many women of her generation, becoming a volunteer on many committees - including for a local youth club and developing old peoples' independent living accomodation. My parents were keen sportspeople and ran a tennis and badminton club named after the one started in Rueil Malmaison, France by my Grandfather - Rueil Athletic Club.

Louise attended Central School of Art and became a designer at the BBC and then ran her own very successful props company for 40 years with her husband Keir Lusby. In 2012 they won a Bafta for Lifetime Achievement for their creative work at Shepperton Studios under the banner, Keir Lusby Props.

Yvette attended The Royal College of Music & Drama, Cardiff in 1968 -1970 and then had a successful acting career until later becoming a Bafta award winning Producer/Director of Documentaries & dramas with her company Vanson Productions. See PROFILE for more info...

Yvette at 21 with her French grandmother, Marcelle Hartwig and her English grandmother on her Mother's side, Edith Kendall.

My Grandmother Edith Kendall (born White/Weiss?, an East End cockney) and Grandfather William Kendall were publicans at the White Hart, Ebury Street, London in the 1930's and post war moved to The Royal George, Hersham, Surrey. Bill died before I was born but Granny continued to run the pub with the help of her friend Ethel, pictured here, with crates and fag!

The French Hartwig family was altogether more sophisticated! Here is my Father's Mother, Marcelle and younger brother Andre with her Father Paul, and Mother Mime in NIce in 1908...

...and here is my Father, Paul aged 5, with his Father Alfred Vanson and Mother Marcelle Hartwig and various members of the family Vanson in 1919...
